Thrift Store Craftyness

i am a big fan of re-purposing objects.  instead of contributing to already overflowing landfills, i can breathe new life into an object.

it feeds my pack-rat heart, nicely.  which reminds me of my new year's resolution to declutter.  i feel a classic man vs himself conflict here... but i digress.

i am an even bigger fan of frugality.  hmm...is that a word?  perhaps i should say, i'm frugal with style

with ballooning prices demanding every nickel spent wisely, my love of thrift stores blessed me.  this year for Christmas I found ways to stretch my gift dollar, particularly with my children.  i found mint in the box, or like new, toys and clothing for Princess and Superhero.

for example,  i purchased two mini-drawers from a favorite local goodwill.  both drawers were primarily white, with a country style hearts painted on the fronts.  the original design was perfect for my girl, but completely unsuitable for my monster loving son.

so, i decided to get glue-gun happy.

for princess's i added some butterfly stickers to the top and back of the drawer, with puffy heart stickers to the sides.  she loves stickers, and heart shaped, well, anything.  very girlie, very her.

for little e, i hot glued fur material to the top, sides and back, intentionally leaving jagged edges for an untamed look.  my hubby spray painted the drawers with a high gloss black color. and once the paint dried, i added googly eyes to the top drawer pulls,  a mummy, i cut out of one our halloween decorations, to the second drawer, and glittery alien-faced stickers to the bottom drawer.

i had on-hand the stickers, paint, eyes, and mummy.  the monster fur, was a kind donation from my mom.  so, with a little late night crafting, and the help of a mischievous hot glue gun (it kept trying to stick my fingers together!) i enjoyed the sound of delighted giggles on Christmas morning.

my daughter uses her drawers for small dolls and clothes. and my son puts his monster collection in his.  the orginial price tags said 21.50, each.  i purchased both for 5 dollars!  woohoo!  frugal AND fun AND the kids love 'em!
