I caught my kids purple-handed

the light through the window, shinning through the cup, led to a filtered light study.
enter unschooling method, an unplanned child-led experiment with colors:

i sprinted up to the attic to retrieve a roll of red vellum, leftover from decorations past.
caught in the moment, the original science observation binder still in the scene:

which led to a craft.
i showed the children what i was doing, but i did it, because of the tricky, high cut risk, scissor work.

i cut the center out of two plastic yogurt lids:

the two rings fit inside one another:

i opened the ring, placed the vellum inside, and "snapped" the rings together again.
then, cut around the outer edge, removing extra red.

we went outside to observe the color  "changes" in nature and natural light:

the kids learned, and played:

Following my kids interests at the moment is fun and keeps me on my homeschooling toes.  I like seeing them discover, especially when they begin the process first!

Little e, still completed his original science work that day, just much later.

tips:

1.  if you have a box cutter, or exacto knife, use that instead of scissors.  it surely will ease the process.
2.  if you don't have vellum, try plastic wrap.
3.  make more than one color disk and experiment with layering the disks.
4.  make some extras for monster faces..hee hee.  thats my son's request!

i hope you are having a great day!

I, like you, am a pack rat. I still have the colored sunglasses from my wild teenage years. A red one anda blue one. B and A love to look throuh them. They notice how blue things look purple with red glasses and red things look purple with blue glasses. They think it's hilarious!
