Flower Pots and Bookends

from my friend Wendy:

Spring.. A time for green thumbs to unite!

Not in my house.  We go fake.  I live in a really small house so each item must have multiple uses, like our fake flowers.  There’s no place really for their mountain of books,  I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on some cute bookends and I’m always wanting to make projects the kids can do and be proud of.  So to solve all these problems we made flower pot bookends.

Cheap-o pots from Wallyworld $2 each, (flat wide ones would work best) fake flowers $1 each, white rock stolen from the flowerbed outside.  (I must report that the flower bed was there when we bought the house and now it’s barren )

They painted their pot any color they wanted, you have to let the first color dry before adding another to preserve each color.  Although my son wanted to cover the entire pot with a new color each time.

Paint roller left over from an Easter egg coloring kit.

It’s very important to make sure your pot is heavy or the books will just push them over.  I found that out the hard way.

They chose the flowers, the paint and the style of decoration.  This way it’s a complete creation of their own that we will use as long as we store books.  Which will be forever, or until they are sick of their kiddie art and buy their own bookends.   They are very proud, every time we have a friend over they have to show them off.
