Preventing Spills

Have you ever picked up a package of meat at the grocery store and the liquid seeping from the container trickled onto your hand and down your arm? Well, I have and I hope you haven't!! Its so gross! I'm thankful many stores have paper towels and disinfectant wipes near the meat! For a germ-a-phobe like me, if I didn't have a way to sanitize my hands afterward, it would just irk me until I correctly addressed the problem. I just can't stand getting germy hands and then picking up my kids--who are nearly always shopping with me--because I feel I like I am coating them with bacteria filled juice meat!! Sadly, since a spontaneous bath with the produce sprinkles is not allowed, a law-abiding solution is necessary!
My disdain for meat juice (really gross term, ey?) and its ability to contaminate anything it touches, has led to a preventive measure in my fridge: double bagging the meat and placing it on a plate in the fridge. This way, any liquid that sneaks out of the container is caught either by the bags or the plate.
Also, when it is time to cook the meat, I open the package with the meat still in the plastic bags. Again, the bags catch the liquid. After the meat is transfered to the pan or baking dish, I just knot the handles together and toss the whole lot into the trash, without spilling any on counters. However, as an extra precaution, I still wipe down the counters.
Using the plastic bags in this manner, eases my mind and keeps the fridge shelving, other food and counters, clean.
Wouldn't the world be a better place, if everyone was a germ-a-phobe? Although I would settle for produce sprinkler runs--hey, its cheaper than a slip-n-slide!

I hate meat juice too! I won't let the kids touch any meat product while we're shopping. I mommy eyes sees the e-coli squirming around on it..IIICCCKKK!

Oh yes! That's just icky! I double-bag meat too and do the same thing, including the plate (or other container) in the fridge. I don't want that stuff anywhere!
